Be a Mentor

Do you remember when you knew a job, college or other career training was an option for you? A lot of great kids in your community grow up never thinking they have more than a few job opportunities. Imagine being the person who introduces a child to more possibilities. That’s what a mentor can do. And truthfully, mentoring a child is a great way to expand your own opportunities.

Mentoring is about consistently showing up and slowly building a friendship through shared experiences (trips to the mall, playing ball, driving in the car, and drinking ice-cream shakes) – a lot of things you already enjoy.

And while both of you may acknowledge how much you enjoy hanging out, mentoring’s real impact is most often seen years down the road – the culmination of all your afternoons. It’s the later choices your young friend will make throughout life that will represent the big impact of all your small moments.
