Program Description
The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program matches trained volunteers, age 50 and over, with students in grades K-4 who need help developing reading and language skills. Volunteers work one-on-one with the child, during the school day, as a tutor, mentor and friend. Tutors work with the same child throughout the school year. Many of the children who are referred to have an OASIS tutor are children who need the extra attention, and who may not have an older, caring adult in their lives. These children don't qualify for other special services, but could fall through the cracks if not helped. The tutor program is active in the Portland Metro and Southwest Washington areas in the following school districts: Gresham-Barlow, Beaverton, Sherwood, David Douglas,Portland, Reynolds and Vancouver. No previous teaching experience is necessary. The OASIS program is noted for its excellent, award-winning training for tutors. The free tutor training is held twice a year, in the fall and again in January. You may train in a district other than where you will tutor. For more information, the list of participating schools or to register for the new tutor training, please call: 503-833-3636. We hope you join us!
