Program Description
Family of Friends matches singles, couples and families with 6- to 9-year-old children in need of additional positive relationships. Once the match has been made, an amazing relationship begins. The child is included in the mentor's everyday activities. This may mean setting an extra place at the dinner table or taking the child to the park or zoo. It may include helping the child with his homework or teachng other new skills. Our mentors help broaden their mentees' views of the world and their places in it. Mentors meet with a child a three to four times a month for a year. At the end of the year, the match may continue for another year. Family of Friends will support the match as long as the mentor and mentee want to continue.
Ages of Youth in the Program
6 to 9
Description of Youth in the Program
Family of Friends enrolls 6- to 9-year-old children in need of additional caring, supportive relationships. Seventy-five percent are being raised by a single woman – mom, grandma, auntie or sister. About two thirds are girls, one third boys. They are a diverse bunch of kids – shy and outgoing, athletic and artistic, funny and sad, adventurous and timid. And we think they all are wonderful!
Quality Standards of Program
Family of Friends provides mentor training, ongoing support, resources and other services as needed. We conduct a thorough background check of all mentors that includes fingerprinting and home visits. Adult mentors meet regularly for peer support at a Council of Families meeting. Our match support staff make regular contact with our mentors and mentees, making sure things are running smoothly.
Youth Goals and Outcomes
More positive self esteem and improved social functioning and a connected relationship with a caring adult.
