Program Description
Volunteers interact one-on-one with an elementary school age child through conversation, playing games, scholastic and/or recreational activities once a week throughout the entire school year for one hour per week.

Description of Youth in the Program
Kindergarten through 5th grade students from schools in Clackamas, Happy Valley and Milwaukie who have been identified by the counselors at their schools due to struggles with social skills, self esteem, or difficulties with their school performance or home life.

Youth Goals and Outcomes
The lunch buddy program seeks to bring volunteers into schools to work with students ad provide positive role modeling, support and friendship. Over time, the goal is to increase grade performance, improve attendance, decrease discipline referrals, improve self concept, and increase positive feelings toward their school experience.
Mentor Profile
Mentors must have the ability to be flexible, dependable, resourceful and consistent as well as maintain strict confidentiality. They must recognize and accept the feelings and needs of the child while accepting the child as he or she is. Lunch Buddies meet during the student’s lunch hour, which is typically sometime between 10:30 am to 1 pm, depending on class and school.
Types of Mentoring

- Site-based (limited to one location: school, activity center, workplace, etc.)
Hours Needed
- Weekday Mornings: 8 am to Noon
- Weekday Afternoon: Noon to 3 pm
