Program Description

Experience Corps is an innovative and award winning national service program that creates opportunities for older adults (55+)to take part in vital public and community service. Experience Corps members work to provide children with mentoring and tutoring services in Portland metropolitan area elementary schools—helping children to read and to develop the confidence and skills to succeed in school and in life.

We serve children in these schools (school district listed in parenthesis): Barnes Elementary (Beaverton), Gilbert Heights Elementary (David Douglas), Prescott Elementary (Parkrose), Sacramento Elementary (Parkrose SD), James John Elementary (Portland), Lents Elementary (Portland), Marysville Elementary (Portland), Woodlawn Elementary (Portland), Davis Elementary (Reynolds), Hall Elementary (Gresham Barlow), Whitcomb Elementary (North Clackamas), and Rowe Middle School (North Clackamas).

Description of Youth in the Program

Elementary school students in need of academic, behavioral and social support.

Quality Standards of Program

Prospective mentors must possess the academic skill necessary to tutor/guide children, be able to pass all screening requirements, be willing to commit to 5 to 15 hours of service per week, and be fifty-five or older. EC volunteers serve as a member of a team and are provided with multiple training opportunities.

Youth Goals and Outcomes

Experience Corps aims to support the academic, behavioral and social growth of students while simultaneously providing older adults (55+)with opportunities for meaningful community and civic engagement.

Mentor Profile

Older adult (55+) community volunteers willing to spend 5-15 hours a week tutoring and mentoring elementary school students.

Types of Mentoring

  • Volunteer with one youth (one-to-one mentoring)
  • Volunteer(s) with one or more youth (group or team)
  • Stipend or financially supported mentor

Place Where Mentoring Occurs

  • Site-based (limited to one location: school, activity center, workplace, etc.)

Hours Needed

  • Weekday Mornings: 8 am to Noon
  • Weekday Afternoon: Noon to 3 pm
  • Weekday After School: 3 pm to 5 pm
