Program Description
The Pediatric Chemo Pal Program helps breaks through the isolation, chaos and loneliness of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments by providing trusted, dependable and carefully matched mentors to children and teens.

Description of Youth in the Program
Chemo Pal kids are children and teens undergoing treatment for cancer at Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital or Doernbecher Children's Hospital. These children range in age from 2 years to 21 years and come from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The volunteer program's purpose is to provide a supportive relationship, ensuring that each child maintains self-esteem and confidence throughout the emotionally isolating and physically difficult cancer treatment. The Chemo Pal volunteer provides support and guidance through dependable visits in the midst of the lonely battle against cancer.
Mentor Profile
A Pediatric Chemo Pal mentor builds a long-term relationship with a child/teen undergoing cancer treatment in Oregon through companionship, diversion, compassion, and fun and engaging activities. The mentor provides a supportive relationship ensuring that the child maintains their self-esteem and confidence throughout the emotionally isolating and physically difficult cancer treatment.
Qualifications:
Be 18 years or older.
Have a valid driver's license and automobile insurance if your car is used to travel to and from the location where you are volunteering.
Be able to make a 12-18 month commitment and visit a child/teen 2-3 times per month for 1 – 2 hours.
Have daytime flexibility to visit children Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm
Be interested in and able to organize and facilitate activities with children.
Be able to communicate clearly and maintain boundaries.
Have not experienced the death of a family member or close friend within the last 12 months.
Have not been diagnosed/treated for a serious illness within the last 12 months.

- Weekday Mornings: 8 am to Noon
