Program Description
The Reaching Out Mentoring Program is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches youth with a caring adult volunteer from the community. Students eligible for the program are those reading below grade level, having discipline issues or living in substandard conditions. The Reaching Out Program is a school-based program in which mentors meet with their mentees on campus during the school day.
Ages of Youth in the Program
9 to 18
Description of Youth in the Program
The students we serve attend Pleasant Hill Middle School and High School, Cottage Grove High School, and Lincoln Middle School in Cottage Grove. Most of our students are White/Caucasian living in rural areas surrounding the Eugene/Springfield and Cottage Grove areas.
Quality Standards of Program
All mentors are screened and must pass a background check before being accepted into our program. Volunteers received initial training before being matched with a student, and should attend at least two additional training sessions during the school year. Our Family Resource Centers in both Pleassant Hill and Cottage Grove also provide on-going support to our students' families.
Youth Goals and Outcomes
To match students who have been identified as at risk with an adult from the community who can provide additional academic and social support. Through building this relationship we hope to prevent dropping-out, lower drug and alcohol use and steer students away from crime.
