Program Description

DDMP is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches a student from the David Douglas School District with an adult mentor from the community. Students selected for the program are those with highest needs (low academic performance, behavior issues, language and cultural barriers) and could benefit from having a positive role model. Mentors will meet with their mentees at least one hour a week at their school, after the school day.

Description of Youth in the Program

The students we serve are from Lincoln Park Elementary, Mill Park Elementary, and Ron Russell Middle School, and are in grades 4 through 8. Students that are in high need of a positive adult role model. Possible academic issues, behavior or social problems, self-esteem and confidence concerns. Any gender, or ethnicity although there are large populations of immigrants students at this particular district.

Youth Goals and Outcomes

DDMP takes an assets-based mentoring approach that focuses on helping youth build their own capacity to succeed in education and in life. By empowering youth to make good decisions and set positive goals, DDMP strives to impact in these areas: academic achievement and attitudes towards school and education; alcohol and substance abuse; gang involvement and delinquency; family and peer relations; and youth self-esteem and confidence.

Mentor Profile

We are looking for adults that have experience working with youth and are flexible, caring, creative, independent, reliable, patient, compassionate. Basically, have a sense of humor, be a good listener, and a positive role model. Mentors must be willing to commit for a twelve month period and a background check is required.

Types of Mentoring

  • Volunteer with one youth (one-to-one mentoring)

Place Where Mentoring Occurs

  • Site-based (limited to one location: school, activity center, workplace, etc.)

Hours Needed

  • Weekday After School: 3 pm to 5 pm
