Program Description
The Lunch Buddy Program seeks to provide friendship, support and encouragement through a one-to-one relationship for the duration of the school year. Volunteers have lunch with their "buddies" and interact through recreational lunchtime activities, emphasizing the enhancement of self-esteem and social skills.
Ages of Youth in the Program
6 to 11
Description of Youth in the Program
Students in grades 1-5 attending Markham Elementary School in Southwest Portland and selected schools in North Portland. Participants are referred by school teachers, counselors and administrators based primarily on their social/emotional needs.
Quality Standards of Program
*Lunch Buddy volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. They must be available for the remainder of the school year. They should have a desire to work with young people and the ability to accept them as individuals. They should demonstrate patience and commitment and the ability to maintain confidentiality. And they should be open and accepting of cultural and other differences.
Volunteers should also be open and responsive to on-site feedback and training as provided by the program coordinator.
Youth Goals and Outcomes
To contribute to successful mentoring matches which provide personal support and a listening ear for elementary school children with corresponding needs. To cultivate relationships which enhance self-esteem and social skills and make an overall positive contribution to the school experience.
Mentor Profile
Mentors must be at least 16 years of age. We seek individuals who demonstrate patience and commitment. We also expect our volunteers to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and the ability to maintain confidentiality. We encourage them to assist with problem-solving and reinforce student successes. They should adhere to school rules and proceedures and be a positive role model for the student.

- Site-based (limited to one location: school, activity center, workplace, etc.)
